Backbone Magazine Selects Pixton for PICK 20 Award

Hot off the press in today's issue of The Globe and Mail, Pixton was named one of the "20 companies that are driving innovation and changing the way we use the Internet" by Backbone Magazine.

Judge Michael Geist, an expert in internet and e-commerce law, enjoyed seeing something “new and creative” and Judge Bradley Shende, media expert on Global’s Morning News, said Pixton “outputs creativity, collaboration, crowdsourcing and community all in an innovative new spin on an old, previously non-democratic medium.”

PICK 20 is the only national ranking of its kind and judges scored the nominees against five criteria: ROI, competitive advantage, ongoing value, execution and innovation. Other winners include Now Public, Kaboose, and social gaming powerhouse Club Penguin.

Pixton.com attracts people of all ages, from 199 countries representing more than 40 languages, to tell jokes, share stories and express opinions in professional-quality comic formats. Members can grab, create and remix their own Pixton comic characters and storylines with a click of the mouse, making do-it-yourself comics a fun, social and interactive game-like experience found nowhere else.

So far we've doubled our membership twice over the past six months, with over a quarter of a million characters created. Our vision is to transform how the world makes comics, creating a premier destination on the web while driving a high-growth business, and this award recognizes us at a time when we're only just getting started!

Congratulations to the other winners! Read more about the PICK 20 here.

Guardian UK article makes mention of Pixton

We're honoured to have been mentioned in Rowenna Davis' article "A gigantic online swapshop" in today's issue of The Guardian UK.

In the next academic year, all schools in the UK will have access to a new National Digital Resource Bank. The NDRB will contain educational resources that are quality assured and copyright safe. As with anything new and innovative, the NDRB isn't immune from controversy: Is the Bank a good idea? Should moderation of new content be centralized, or opened up to the entire teaching community? Should content be promoted over tools, or are content and tools equally important?

Read the article here - food for thought!

Sharing Cartoons with the World

Sharing Cartoons with the World from Jonathan Marks on Vimeo.

At SXSW, we had the pleasure to meet and have a quick interview on camera with the media "insultant" Jonathan Marks, Founder of Critical Distance in the Netherlands. His experience of more than 25 years in the broadcasting business has taken him to many exotic places around the globe including Austin, TX.

Marks is interested in the ways in which traditional and emerging media are used to share ideas across borders. He uses a relevant mix of video, audio and text to capture his stories. Operating on the edge of broadcast and mobile, Marks explores how emerging technologies enhance the effectiveness of digital storytelling in all corners of the world, and most recently in Africa.

To watch the video interview of Clive giving a demo of Pixton and Pixton animation (a world's first - coming soon!) on a 78" Promethean interactive whiteboard click on the video above. Enjoy!
